The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute

The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, based in Aberdeen, is an international centre of expertise for the environmental and social consequences of rural land uses. Interdisciplinary research across the environmental and social sciences aims to support the protection of natural resources, the creation of integrated land use systems, and the development of sustainable rural communities. The Institute employs around 300 staff and has an income of over £16 million. In addition to its core research programmes, the institute provides research and consultancy services to a wide range of organisations, including industrial sectors as diverse as oil and gas, and food. Consultancy is provided through its subsidiary company Macaulay Scientific Consulting.

The Macaulay Land Use Research Institute and SCRI joined forces on 1 April 2011 to create The James Hutton Institute. It is the first Institute of its type in Europe and will make major, new contributions to the understanding of key global issues such as food, energy and environmental security.
