Glasgow Science Centre

By Dr. Susie Mitchell, Programme Director, Glasgow City of Science and Innovation

In just three weeks’ time, on 20th November, the iconic Glasgow Science Centre, nestled on the banks of the River Clyde, is set to become the stage for the CAN DO Innovation Summit. This flagship event has been carefully crafted to help Scottish small to medium sized enterprises explore new possibilities and unlock their innovation potential. It will also provide a platform to meet the entrepreneurial academics, innovators and investors that can help SMEs to grow through innovation.
Scotland has a gift for innovation, and in 2019 we boast world-leading research across emerging areas – from communications technologies and precision medicine to low carbon and manufacturing, to name a few. SMEs will play a critical role in building cultures of innovation that combine human creativity and entrepreneurship whilst adopting technologies to future-proof their businesses. They will design the breakthrough solutions that will improve productivity - and ultimately benefit people and the planet.
Because innovation is not just important for business. It is also critical in tackling the 21st century’s challenges we are facing - aging societies, the impacts of AI and big data, chronic disease, the effects of climate change and more.
The CAN DO Innovation Summit will showcase over 40 exemplar SMEs across a range of themed ‘future trend’ parallel sessions, who are leading the way in innovating human-centred products, services and business models with economic and social impacts. Crucially they will share collaborative practises that will make their organisations future-ready!
Companies like Sustainably (a fintech start-up for social good), will talk about how they have used the power of responsible business practices to solve societal challenges.
Through real-life peer experiences and representatives from key support agencies, like Interface who are running a parallel session, we will help attendees to navigate the rich, innovation-focused resources and support available in Scotland and beyond.

To set the scene, we will be treated to world-leading experts from LEGO, Creative Play Lab, Amazon and Harvard who will provide inspiration and critical insights to help businesses realise their potential.  Moreover, the Scottish Minister for Trade, Investment and Innovation and Innovate UK’s Executive Chair will set down Scotland and the UK’s innovation ambitions and talk about forthcoming opportunities that will further support and empower SMEs to innovate with impact.
The CAN DO Innovation is Summit is part of Scotland Can Do, a framework that sets a vision to make Scotland a world-leading entrepreneurial and innovative nation where innovation and growth that benefits all in society, go hand in hand. The Summit is kindly supported by KTN/Innovate UK, Glasgow City Council, Scottish Funding Council, Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise.
